Testing was undertaken in the townland of Milltown, Milltownpass, to fulfill a request for further information from Westmeath County Council. The planning reference number is 18/6259. The applicant has applied for permission to construct 4 dwelling houses. Westmeath County Council have requested that pre-development testing be carried out at the site as the proposed development will be within the area of Archaeological Potential of WM033-019, castle unclassified. WM033-019, castle unclassified, is depicted as 'Site of Castle' on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map.
Previous testing was undertaken in the south-east portion of the same site in 2001 by Michael Tierney, planning reference number 99/1344, licence 01E0600. A total of five trenches were excavated in the south-east portion of the site in the area of the old farmyard. No archaeological features or materials were recorded in any of the five test trenches.
The testing undertaken in 2019 concentrated in the north-west portion of the development site, a green field site as the south-east portion of the development site which contains the remains of an old farmyard (which was tested in 2001) is now covered with concrete hard standing. A total of nine trenches were excavated on the footprint of the four house sites. Topsoil was recorded in all the trenches and to a depth of 0.3-0.5m. The topsoil overlay a brown boulder clay (subsoil). The same largely undisturbed subsoil was recorded in each of the trenches. No archaeological features, stratigraphy or artefacts were recorded in any of the test trenches.
