Monitoring was conducted during advance site investigations and subsequent installation of a new in-road watermain at Ballyvoyle, approximately 3.3km west of the village of Stradbally, Co. Waterford.
The monitoring was required due to the location of works within the Zones of Archaeological Potential of two ringforts (WA032-002- and WA032-003-).
Site investigations were conducted on 10/04/2019 and comprised the mechanical excavation of 2 Trial Holes within the Zones of Archaeological Potential established for the above monuments. Average dimensions for the SI were 2m north-west/south-east x 0.7m to a depth of 1.1m. Excavated materials comprised a reddish-brown silty clay with frequent fragmented shale and bedrock was encountered at 1.1m depth.
The installation works commenced on 30/04/2019 and involved the mechanical excavation of approximately 125m within the constraints area. The general excavated profile matched that of the initial site investigations and no finds, features or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered during the works.
