Archaeological excavation was carried out within the confines of TS079-017, an enclosure, in relation to an application (planning ref. 19/600074) to extend an existing dwelling house, to construct a garage and to carry out associated site works on a 0.17 hectare site in Figlash townland, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary.

Archaeological monitoring and subsequent excavation was carried out. Monitoring was carried out from 11-13 May 2019 (see Excavations.ie 2019:192), and excavation from 19-21 June 2019.

Based on development plans, the site was divided into four parts: "house extension” area, "septic tank” area, “percolation” area, “garage” area. The "house extension" area is located in the south-western part of the site, to the immediate rear of the existing house, where a large pit, part of possible kiln, and a post-hole were found. The “percolation” area is located in the central part of the site, where four pits, a post-hole and furrow were observed. The features observed in the ”septic tank” and “garage” areas during archaeological testing turned out to be non-archaeological.

Nine features, which were qualified as archaeological in origin, were excavated at the site: five pits, two post-holes, a furrow and part of a possible kiln.

The recovery of a fragment of lignite bracelet in one of the pits suggests an early medieval date for the enclosure. However, a number of worked stone finds including part of a flint blade seem to indicate an earlier occupation of the settlement site.
