Excavation work was carried out by Tipperary County Council on Main Street and on Burke Street, Fethard, Co. Tipperary. Excavation works related to the replacement of street trees, with associated footpath reconstruction, and were monitored over six days between 5 and 19 February 2019.
The work involved the excavation of eleven mature tree stumps from existing footpaths. The trees were removed to facilitate the planting of a deeper rooting tree species to minimise the effects of tree root damage on footpath surfaces. As the existing tree roots were shallow, excavation was confined to a depth of up to 0.35m, and replacement trees were planted in the same locations. Associated footpath reconstruction involved removing existing concrete footpath surfaces and kerbing to excavated depths of no greater than 0.2m prior to relaying new surfaces.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the excavation works on Main Street and Burke Street.
