Planning permission was granted to The Committee of MĂșintir na Tire Community to widen an existing entrance and to extend a car-park, erect two light standards, provide lighting, storm water drainage and all associated site works at the Community Hall, Clashganny West, Newcastle. As part of granted planning permission, it was required that ground works would be monitored. However, limited ground works were monitored as all of the works associated with extending the car-park including ducting had been undertaken in late 2018 without an archaeological presence. An examination of exposed stratigraphy and the opening of two inspection holes revealed nothing of an archaeological nature.
No works had commenced on widening the car-park entrance which was monitored. These monitored works revealed nothing of an archaeological nature with the stratigraphy relatively consistent in the excavated areas: a thin hardcore/tarmac surface overlying a mid to dark brown topsoil-like material, averaging 0.25m, which extended to the naturally deposited soil. No features were found that in any way could be associated with the settlement cluster (TS088-032) at Clashganny West and Middlequater townlands.
