Development involved construction of an underground grid connection measuring approximately 3.12km in length, with the excavated trench measuring on average 1.2m deep x 0.4m wide.
Works commenced at the northern end of the development area with the excavation of an approximately 250m long east-west trench. Monitoring in this location revealed approximately 0.2m of topsoil over peat for 175m, at which point ground conditions changed to 0.2m of topsoil over a friable mid-grey sandy marl.
The above-mentioned east/west trench terminated at a County Road, and excavation for the remainder of the scheme up to the point of the Sligo/Mayo border was within the road carriageway. Excavation within the carriageway generally revealed approximately 0.4m of tarmac/road fill over a friable grey gravelly sandy marl, although towards the southern end of the scheme a thin layer of peat was revealed under a stony clay. A number of modern culverts were encountered during the excavation works.
No archaeological features or artefacts were revealed as a result of carrying out the monitoring.
