An archaeological excavation was carried out at the site of Ardcurley 2 in advance of construction of the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development Scheme in Co. Sligo.
The excavation was carried out between 18 and 19 April 2019 by Colum Hardy and James McKee of Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) Ltd, on behalf of Roadbridge.
The site was identified during testing (Reg No. E005036) undertaken by AMS in 2019 within a Temporary Works Area located towards the northern end of the N4 Road Scheme in the townland of Ardcurley.
The archaeological remains at Ardcurley 2 consisted of a possible kiln and an associated deposit of burnt clay. A modern plough furrow/drain was also recorded but did not truncate the archaeology.
The kiln was keyhole-shaped, with the bowl to the south-east and flue to the north-west and measured 2.38m by 0.12–0.88m by 0.23m in depth. The bowl had gradual sloping sides and a concave base while the flue had vertical sides and a flat base. It contained two fills and a distinct orange burnt clay was recorded along either edge of the flue signifying increased heating of this part of the kiln (presumably between the bowl and fire spot). A burnt clay deposit was located c. 1.73m to the west of the possible kiln. This deposit was sub-circular in plan and measured 0.26m by 0.25m with a maximum depth of 0.09m. A possible tanged iron knife was found within this burnt clay deposit.
Post-excavation analysis is ongoing, including comparative research and specialist analyses (radiocarbon dating and artefact analysis), which will hopefully further enhance our understanding of this site. A final report incorporating the results of this analysis is due to be completed in June 2021.
