Monitoring of the excavation of a service trench to repair a water pipe in the vicinity of National Monument 119, High Cross (SL008-084004-), at Drumcliffe monastic centre, Drumcliffe South, Co. Sligo was undertaken on July 30 2019.
Following cutting of the tarmacadam surface, the trench was excavated using a mechanical excavator equipped with a graded bucket to access the water pipe. The excavated trench measured 0.5m wide, 0.5m deep and 4m north-west/south-east. The stratigraphy was consistent throughout, consisting of 0.06m tarmac surface over rough modern redeposited fill 0.4m deep. This overlay a dark brown orangey clay containing occasional small stones.
Several other services traversed the trench including two sewer pipes and an eircom duct. The water pipe was located and repaired. The fill of the trench consisted of a redeposited material used to backfill the area after the previous services were inserted. No archaeological material was noted during monitoring.
