A programme of archaeological testing was undertaken in October 2019 at the site of a proposed development at Ferganstown/Ballymacon townlands, Boyne Road, Navan, County Meath.
The proposed residential development comprises of 99 units on the Boyne Road, overlooking the Boyne Valley, 2km north east of Navan. The site was previously the subject of an Archaeological Assessment by Rosanne Meenan for a now lapsed conditional grant of planning (NA140132) and a further assessment was completed by Moore Group in 2019.
The subject site is located to the south of a section of the Boyne Canal built in the late 19th century to bypass rapids. There are no recorded monuments within the site. The nearest sites include a barrow (ME025-029) to the south west destroyed during construction in 1976 and a hut site and souterrain discovered during excavation for a Wastewater Treatment Plant (ME025-058001- ME025-058003-).
No archaeology was identified during testing. Some features of archaeological potential noted in an earlier geophysical survey were identified either as variations in the natural subsoil/bedrock or as the remains of modern agricultural activity, field boundaries and land drains, and were therefore considered to be of no archaeological significance.
