Test trenching took place on site from April to May 2019, and followed on from a previous course of geophysical survey (Licence No. 17R0229) and trial trenching across the site in 2018 (Licence No. 18E0013).
The testing identified archaeological pits and burnt mound activity, primarily in the north of the site. Two linear ditch-like features were interpreted as being archaeological, with a number of other undated linear features not confirmed as agricultural or archaeological. Some of the linear ditch-like features are likely to represent drainage or infilled former field boundaries although no corresponding boundaries have been identified on the first edition or later mapping. Frequent modern narrow drains were detected across the fields sometimes connected to a shallow ditch. It was identified in previous assessments that the site is poorly draining and susceptible to flooding so intensive agricultural drainage can be expected.
The identified features were excavated by IAC Archaeology in a subsequent course of rescue excavation in July 2019 (Licence No. 18E0013).
