The test excavation of a site in advance of its development at Cloongawnagh townland in County Mayo was carried out on 1 May 2019 in response to a Request for Further Information by Mayo County Council and was necessary due to the size of the site area and the scale of the proposed development. There were no recorded monuments within or in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development site. No features of archaeological significance were visible within or in the immediate vicinity of the site.
The site was located on the north-east side of a local road and consisted of a gently undulating field of pasture. The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of four trenches which measured 83.9m, 110.9m, 79.7m and 110.7m long respectively; 1.8-2.1m wide and 0.2-1.1m deep. The pre-development testing revealed topsoil above natural subsoils and one area of re-deposited material/fill. The area of fill appeared to have been associated with the reclamation of the field. A number of land drains were visible crossing the site. No artefacts were recovered.
Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
