Testing of a proposed development at Marshes Upper townland was undertaken. Five trenches were excavated within the site, one being located along the proposed road to the south and the remainder (2-5) positioned within the proposed building footprint. The trenches were positioned so as to avoid existing services including a watermain, gas main and data cables all extending through the site. The stratigraphy differed slightly overall. Trench 1 consisted of 0.9m of mixed modern fill to the depth of the natural. Trenches 2 and 3 consisted of shallow trenches with 0.3m overlying natural. Trenches 4 and 5 consisted of 1m deep trenches with introduced material overlying the original topsoil and natural.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were encountered within the excavated trenches. The results of the testing and the nature of the material encountered as well as the numerous existing services within the site demonstrates a low potential for archaeological deposits or features.
