Following an impact assessment and geophysical survey (JM Leigh surveys, 17R0021) this large site proposed for a residential development adjacent to the ecclesiastical complex at Mungret was tested. Forty-four trenches were excavated at the site (17E0165). Archaeological features were discovered concentrated in the south-western quadrant of the development site. An impact assessment of the proposed development was undertaken on the discovered archaeological features. A ‘strip and map’ exercise was then undertaken under this licence 18E0745, which fully revealed the features located in the testing in the south-western quadrant of the development site. Twenty-two separate features were discovered along with several artefacts including metal and pottery sherds. The features were identified as larger and smaller pits. These features are predicted to be impacted by development and it has been suggested that they be fully excavated in the future (i.e. preserved by record).
