As part of the Hermitage Archaeological Research Project (HARP) season 2 works undertaken on site comprised further augering at locations that had shown a potential for undisturbed paleoenvironmental material in season 1 (2018). This area was concentrated at the western end of the site. Augering in season 2 was undertaken using a Russian auger that enabled a longer core sequence to be sampled. These samples were successful in the field and show a potential to yield information on the early history of the site and hopefully shed light on the Mesolithic period.
Season 2 work includes post-excavation specialist analyses of samples taken both in season 1 (2018) and season 2 (2019), undertaken under licences issued by the National Museum of Ireland. These analyses are being undertaken at the time of writing and will be reported on in due course.
This research is funded by the National Monuments Service through the Royal Irish Academy's research excavations grant.
