An application to construct 16 additional units to the west of an existing housing estate in Patrickswell village led to the undertaking of a test excavation in advance of construction works. The development is located in Ballyanrahan East townland within the north-western outskirts of the village. It is surrounded by existing housing, a playing field and agricultural land. To the immediate west of the development is Kilcoran graveyard (LI012-087) and there are three enclosures (LI012-086, LI012-089 and LI012-95) in the wider vicinity.
The test excavation focused on the eastern half of the lands where the houses and an access road will be constructed. A total of five test trenches were excavated and it became clear from an early stage that the entire area had been previously disturbed, probably during the construction of the nearby housing estates in the 1970s and 1980s. All indications were that the topsoil had been stripped across the entire area scheduled for development prior to its reintroduction to create the existing playing fields. No undisturbed areas of ground were encountered and no features or finds of archaeological significance exposed.
