Planning permission has been granted for the refurbishment works to facilitate a change of use of the existing Sexton House from a dwelling to a Community Hall – to be called Sexton Hall, Church Lane Manorhamilton. The works include the construction of a single-storey extension to the rear of Sexton House. Due to the proximity of the 18th-century Star Shaped Fort (LE011-015---), the permission came with a condition, requiring archaeological testing. This took place on 31 October 2019.
Two 1m wide and 8m long trenches were machine excavated using a blade bucket. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted in either of the two test trenches opened, with the remains of the two engineering test pits the only features recorded.
It is proposed to strip the footprint of the building down to the surface of the undisturbed natural and lay down a layer of stone to create a solid bed for the proposed raft foundation. All services associated with the scheme will be within the modern 0.7m of overburden without the requirement for any significant disturbance below.
