In February 2019 a proposed development site located at Summerhill, Townparks, Carrick-on-Shannon was tested under licence number 18E0764. The site comprised four fields on a sloping site to the west of the Carrick-on-Shannon former workhouse. The southernmost field (Field 4) could not be tested at the time due to the presence of a watermain. Monitoring of topsoil stripping in Field 4 took place on 21 and 22 October 2019 when groundworks began on site. The watermains was located traversing the field running north-east to south-west. To avoid damaging the pipe during topsoil stripping trial holes were excavated at intervals and a linear trench was excavated along its full length to clearly show the location of the pipe. The remaining area of Field 4 was mechanically stripped of the overlying topsoil to the underlying boulder clay. The depth of the topsoil varied from 0.3m to 0.45m; it consisted of a dark brown clayey silt with occasional small stone inclusions.
No archaeological material was identified at the proposed development site during monitoring. The area to the north-east of Field 4 will be occupied by the entrance to the site. This area has been previously disturbed during the construction of Autumn View estate and the water tower. No monitoring was conducted in this area.
