Fadó Archaeology were commissioned to carry out a programme of archaeological testing at Townparks, Summerhill, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. The proposed housing development is in the vicinity of St. Patrick's Hospital, former Carrick-on-Shannon workhouse (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage Reg. No. 30813043) and comprises an area of 1.13 ha/2.785 Acres.
Testing took place on 7 and 8 February 2019. A total of 8 test trenches of varying lengths, totally 479m, were mechanically excavated at 10m intervals across the three fields that comprised the proposed development area. All trenches were excavated to the top of the underlying boulder clay. Depths of soil cover varied across the site, with an average depth of 0.4m.
During testing no archaeological material was identified at the proposed development site.
