Testing took place on 16 and 17 of January 2019 at a proposed development site at Attirory, Carrick-on-shannon, Co. Leitrim. The proposed development is in the vicinity of and within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for a Church, Burial Ground & Ecclesiastical Enclosure (LE031-039-039003).
Five linear test trenches were excavated running north-south at 5m intervals across the site. In total 134m of test trenches were excavated to the underlying substrate.
Two sections of a possible ditch were noted, likely to be the continuation of the Ecclesiastical Enclosure (LE031-039003-) of Attirory, uncovered in the north-east quadrant of the site. Other features consisted of a series of post-holes and pits of various forms some containing animal bone and slag. These features appear to be within the interior of the enclosure, suggesting that this area of the ecclesiastical site was for industrial activity including metalworking.
