Testing was carried out at the site of a proposed burial ground extension at Gubalaun townland, Rossinver, Co. Leitrim on 10 January, 2019. The proposed site is located to the south-east of Gubalaun Abbey/St Mogue’s Church and is just to the north of a modern burial ground.
The excavation of five trenches at the site revealed highly disturbed ground, with re-deposited fills having depths of between 1.6m and 2.2m under sod in four trenches. Only one trench to the north-east was composed of naturally occurring sand and gravel. The disturbance at the site appears to be modern in date and mechanical in nature and it may relate to ground works undertaken to facilitate the modern burial ground in the same field to the south.
