Monitoring was carried out at Fitzmaurice Place, Church Avenue, Portlaoise in advance of the redevelopment of this public space. The development area included the environs of the 16th-century Fort Protector (LA013-041001) and a post-medieval mill (LA013-041005).

During the works, a covered over limestone mill wheelhouse and limestone millrace were identified. These features still functioned as water courses, although were heavily silted. Both of these features dated to the 18th or early 19th century, and were still in use until the electrification of the mill complex here in early 20th century. Both features were preserved in situ.

No other archaeological features were identified.
