Archaeological monitoring and excavation were carried out in advance of the development of a new ESB Substation for the redeveloped Brewhouse Building, Kilkenny City. The works took place intermittently between January and April 2019.

Most of the works were involved in the investigation of proposed new underground services locations in and around the redeveloped Brewhouse Building and Mayfair Building, which will carry a new ESB cable from the Brewhouse Building to a new substation beside the Mayfair Building. Previous investigations by AMS Ltd and ACSU Ltd at the location of the proposed new substation identified post-medieval archaeology related to the Horse Barracks building constructed here c. 1700.

Archaeology dating to the post-medieval period was identified during the monitoring of the new pipe and substation.  This comprised stone walls and cobble layers. Following consultations with the National Monuments Service, this was recorded, covered with geotextile, sand, and preserved in situ.

No other archaeology was identified.
