Test excavations were undertaken at Lisnafunchin National School, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, prior to the proposed construction of a 15m x 20m all-weather playing pitch and 5m high 18m long ball wall, with associated perimeter fencing and drainage. Test excavations were carried out in association with a pre-planning assessment of archaeological potential, given the proximity of the School to a recorded monument - church KK010-140.
Four test trenches were machine excavated at Lisnafunchin National School on 7 September 2019. Six trenches were initially proposed in the method statement that accompanied the licence application. On site, it was deemed that 4 test trenches were sufficient to cover the footprint of the proposed all-weather playing pitch.
Soil stratigraphy was consistent throughout the site, with a sod layer 0.15m in depth overlying the topsoil which comprised compact, light orange/brown, sandy silt with a moderate amount of small sub-angular stones 0.25-0.7m in depth. The subsoil comprised light brown silty sand with frequent small sized angular stones. Sections of two separate field drains were exposed at the north-east end of Trenches 1 and 2; these were modern in date.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were found during test excavations.
