Archaeological test-trenching was required as a result of a request for further information by Kerry County Council with regards to a planning application for a proposed housing development, consisting of three domestic dwellings, at Listry, Co. Kerry. The proposed development covers an area of 0.929 ha. The site is separated from a local road to the north by a church and graveyard (NIAH Reg. No. 21305702).
Test trenches were excavated within the footprint of the development to assess the potential for subsurface archaeological remains. A total of 465 linear metres of test-trenches were excavated, which represented just under 10% of the proposed development site. Constraints on the testing array comprised of a single roadway from the northern entrance to the site.
Evidence of field boundaries marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey maps was uncovered as well as numerous furrows and field drains. No previously unknown archaeological features, finds or deposits were found within the area specified for archaeological testing.
