Archaeological monitoring of ground stripping at the site was undertaken in late June 2019 in very good weather conditions. Stripping was undertaken along the eastern, southern and south-western limits of the site using a 21-ton back-acting track machine with a wide flat grading bucket.
Very little of the original topsoil was noted during monitoring. The stripped area consisted mostly of the remains of re-deposited mixed material stored there in the recent past. A large amount of this material contained black, peaty deposits with frequent small and medium stones as well as several large ex-situ sandstone boulders. All the ex-situ exposed large boulders were cleaned and examined given the associated possibility of uncovering rock art or any other marks on the surface.
No previously unknown archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were found during monitoring of groundworks.
