Testing here comprised of the excavation of seventeen (T1-T17) 2m wide trenches with a total length of c.2000m. Topsoil consisted mostly of a fibrous peat cover that overlay grey or yellowish grey clay. Two of the trenches (T12 & T13) were not excavated to subsoil level for health and safety concerns due to the depth of peat. Two burnt mounds/fulachta fiadh were found during testing. The first (FF1), with maximum exposed dimensions of 7m x 9m (north-south) and a depth of c.0.5m, was recorded in test trench T1 (centre point ITM coordinates: E 486491, N 613119). The second burnt mound (FF2), measuring c.8m x 7.5m, was revealed in trench T17 (centre point ITM coordinates: E 486407, N 613136). Additionally, a small shallow deposit of burnt mound material was noted in the north-east end of test trench T16.
Nothing of archaeological interest was recorded in any of the other trenches and no artefacts were recovered during testing.
