Monitoring was recommended as a condition of planning for the Castlemaine Sewerage Improvement Scheme. The village of Castlemaine is located on the banks of the River Maine and the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on the southern bank of the river in the townland of Brackhill. There are a number of recorded monuments within the vicinity of the sewerage scheme including the former site of Castlemaine Castle, the ruins of which was demolished during the construction of the new bridge crossing the River Maine.
A full archaeological presence was maintained during topsoil and peat removal at the site of the new Wastewater Treatment Plant and no features of archaeological significance were exposed. A watching brief was also maintained during upgrade works at the Pumping Station on the north side of the river and nothing of archaeological significance was encountered. Trenching for a pipeline from the Wastewater Treatment Plant to the public road was also carried out under archaeological supervision and no archaeological finds or strata were identified.
