Pre-development testing was carried out of a 2.6 hectare site proposed for a social housing development at Lohercannan on the western side of Tralee, Co. Kerry. A total of eight trenches between 140-160m in length were opened across the site and a number of potential features were uncovered. The site is on gently sloping, south-facing ground on the lower slope of a waulsortian limestone reef crowned by a bivallate hillfort Ke029 112. The bedrock on the site was intermittently very high with troughs of deep topsoil between these areas. The uncovered potential features included pits, post-holes, linear features and areas of charcoal-stained and burnt soil. Similar features have previously been uncovered on sites around Tralee over the last 15 years with many proving to be prehistoric in date. The exact nature and function of these features is however unknown at present; further excavation will be undertaken to clarify the nature and extent of the features as part of the development of the site.
