Pre-development testing took place of a proposed social housing development site adjacent to the existing Woodview Estate in Tarbert, Co. Kerry. A total of six trenches were opened across the site which was quite wet with impeded clays and gravels forming much of the subsoil. Two low mounds of fire-cracked stone and blackened soil were recorded in the most northerly trench, Trench 1. The area around the exposed deposits was extended to assess the extent of the burnt mound-type material. The more westerly deposit A extended 6m east-west by 5.1m and was 0.1m in height. The second deposit B was located 5.5m to the east of deposit A. Deposit B extended 12m east-west by 6.8m and was 0.12m in height. The area between the two low mounds was composed of impeded marls and clay and flooded shortly after opening.
As yet it is unclear if the deposits represent two distinct features or are part of one larger burnt mound-type site. The features were recorded and the excavations were backfilled pending consultation with the NMS.
