Following on from geophysical survey of a 5-hectare area around the excavated portal tomb Ke047 052, as part of ongoing research in this area, a number of anomalies were investigated through excavation. Five of these anomalies (Pits A-E) proved to be charcoal-production pits. The pits varied from rectangular with rounded ends to sub-circular. All were capped with re-deposited boulder clay and displayed evidence of intense burning around their edges. All of the excavated pits contained large quantities of wood charcoal which has been sampled and sent for identification prior to radiocarbon dating. Soil samples were also taken from the pits for further analysis. No other archaeological features were identified and no artefacts were recovered.
