Test excavations were undertaken as a part of planning application to construct an inert waste facility on a c.2.7ha site at Ahane, Ballymacelligott, Tralee, Co. Kerry. A series of twenty 1m wide test trenches (T1-T20) were excavated across the limits of the site.
The site comprises extensive peatland varying in depth from 0.4m in the northern limits of the trenches to 1.6m at the south. The bog overlays grey/green sterile impermeable clay. The bog is strewn, sub-surface, with the stumps and trunks of an ancient forest of which pine and oak were identified. No archaeological features, deposits or spreads were noted in any of the test trenches. A single 2.5m x c.0.5m oak log that had been deliberately felled in antiquity was discovered in test trench T13. The oak log was recorded, sampled for further analysis and re-deposited where it was found in T13.
