A pre-planning test excavation was carried out in advance the construction of a single dwelling house in Farna townland on the western outskirts of Castlemaine. The proposed development is located in close proximity to two extant ring barrows (KE047-009 & KE047-008). A buffer zone of 26-35m was agreed with the local authority and this was established prior to the test excavation. In all, five test trenches were placed in those areas of the development that will be subject to the maximum amount of ground disturbance. Two trenches (T1 & T4) were placed across the footprint of the house, one (T2) across the site of the garage, another (T5) along the driveway and a short trench (T3) at the percolation area. There was evidence in all of the trenches for extensive cultivation of the field in the form of narrow and wide shallow trenches filled with humic sediment. No features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered.
