Four test trenches were mechanically excavated on the footprint of the proposed development. Topsoil stripping was carried out by a mechanical excavator operating with a c.2m wide, toothless grading bucket.

Investigations revealed a dark brown, silty topsoil layer across the proposed development site. This was generally c.0.2-0.3m thick. Occasional fragments of modern pottery, plastic and modern metal objects, such as nails, drinks cans and machine parts, were noted within the topsoil across the site.

Topsoil overlay a reddish-brown silty clay subsoil at the east and a yellow/brown silty clay subsoil at the west. The subsoil contained moderate stone and occasional rounded boulders.

An irregular area measuring approximately 15m x 15m at the centre of the subject site appeared to have been disturbed in recent years.

There were no archaeological features or artefacts noted in any of the test trenches excavated on the footprint of the proposed development.
