Monitoring was carried out of duct installation in the immediate vicinity of the 13th-century St. James’s Church and graveyard (GA094-010 & GA094-010001-) near Michael Collins Road, Mervue, Co. Galway. The work involved decommissioning a pole and installing a duct. The duct extended from a mini -pillar on a green space to the rear of No. 28 Glenina Heights.
The open-cut trench was dug with a 3 tonne mini digger using a toothless bucket and terminated at the enclosing wall of St. James’s graveyard. The trench was oriented east-west and measured 6.5m in length, 0.5m wide and 0.45m deep. Groundworks exposed an existing power cable along half of the route. The stratigraphy exposed comprised topsoil over silty clay with modern debris. The subject area had previously been disturbed by construction work and services. No archaeology was found.
