Archaeological monitoring was carried out on the site of conservation works at The Walks, Loughrea townland, Loughrea, Co. Galway on 1 August, 2019. A poorly-preserved retaining wall to the south of ‘the watercourse’, which is along the line of the medieval town defenses, was taken down and a 0.3m-wide section of the embankment immediately to the rear of the wall was mechanically excavated along a 15m length. Re-deposited topsoil containing modern finds was removed from the excavated section. Monitoring resulted in the discovery of a single architectural fragment (Find No. E005094:1) from the walling but no other finds or features were discovered during the excavation of topsoil from the rear of the stone facing. The conservation works progressed to immediately rebuild the stone retaining wall.
