Ten pre-development trenches were mechanically excavated at the site of a proposed burial ground extension at Stowlin townland, Killimor, Co. Galway, on 1 April, 2019. The proposed development is to the south of Kilquain Church, a ruined medieval church (GA108-224), Quansboro graveyard (GA108-224001) and an ecclesiastical enclosure (GA108-224002). Following the completion of a geophysical survey in 2013 and a drone survey, 2018, the line of the ecclesiastical enclosure was recorded and a buffer zone of 10m was established to the south of the enclosure. The proposed development site lies between the buffer zone and the public road to the south.
There were no finds or features of archaeological interest discovered in nine of the trenches but there was an area of in situ burning discovered in Trench 9, along the eastern limits of the proposed burial site. It was recommended that further investigations on this area of burning be undertaken in advance of any development at the site.
