Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed dwelling house at Rooaunmore, Co. Galway on 16 December 2019. The development site is partly located within the area of archaeological constraint for GA113-188 (Ringfort – rath) and GA113-188001 (Souterrain). The monuments comprise a poorly-preserved sub-circular rath, defined by a low bank with evidence of stone-facing, and a souterrain (site of) within the north half of the rath.
Five test trenches were opened on the footprint of the development, two on the site of the proposed dwelling house, and one on each of the sites of the proposed effluent system, percolation area, and stormwater soakpit. The stratigraphy was consistent across the tested area with 0.2m of grey/brown sandy silt topsoil over 0.15m of orange/brown silty sand subsoil over grey/white silty sand natural with frequent stone inclusions. No archaeology was found.
