Monitoring of groundworks took place at Meelick Weir on the River Shannon between Meelick Co. Galway and Lusmagh Co. Offaly, in advance of the refurbishment and repair of the weir. Meelick Weir is a Victorian stone and timber construction that spans the Shannon, providing a pedestrian walkway. Recent weather events have hugely damaged the weir. The refurbishment and repair will see the widening and strengthening of the weir for pedestrian use.
The works involved the boring and drilling of holes at regular intervals into the existing stone weir. These holes supported structural steel which held the new walkway.
No archaeology was identified during the works.
