Monitoring of topsoil stripping in advance of a housing development in Kilgarve townland, on the eastern outskirts of Ballinasloe in County Galway, took place over four days between 27 August and 13 September 2019. The monitoring was a condition of planning and was required due to the size of the proposed development site and the scale of the proposed development. There were no recorded monuments located within or in the immediate vicinity of the site.
The writer monitored topsoil stripping associated with two phases of an adjacent housing development in 2003 and 2004, under Excavation Licence No. 03E0695. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence. The proposed development was located across a large field of relatively flat pasture, the northern third of which had been disturbed during construction of the adjacent housing development just over ten years previously.
Modern housing developments were located to the south, west and north of the proposed development site. The eastern site boundary was a townland boundary and also the county boundary with Roscommon.
The total area stripped measured 134m east-west by 149m. Below the topsoil was natural subsoil and one small area of modern fill associated with the construction of the adjacent housing development. The topsoil contained modern pottery sherds, modern glass fragments, one oyster shell, yellow brick fragments and plastic. One interesting pottery sherd found was from a marmalade jar with the inscription 'JAMES KEILLER &', 'DUNDEE' and 'MARMALADE'. The James Keiller & Son company was formed in 1828 and was subsequently acquired by Crosse & Blackwell in 1920.
Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
