Monitoring of groundworks at a development in Eanach Dhúin townland on the shore of Lough Corrib in County Galway was carried out on 8 February 2019. Pre-development testing of the site had been carried out on 24 May 2018, under the same excavation licence. The testing revealed topsoil above natural subsoils. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence. The development consisted of the construction of a dwelling, garage and private wastewater treatment system. The monitoring, which was a condition of planning, was necessary as the development site was located within the constraint for an archaeological complex (GA069-001), now a redundant record.
The development site was located in the western half of a field of pasture, which sloped down towards the lake. No features of archaeological significance were visible within the field. Immediately west of the site were two dwellings, for which the author monitored the groundworks under Licence Nos. 16E0512 and 17E0560. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence at either site.
The groundworks which were carried out consisted of the reduction in levels, by 0.3-0.5m, for the access road/driveway, dwelling, garage and wastewater treatment system. The area reduced for the access road measured 58m north-east/south-west and 4.5-9m wide. The area reduced for the dwelling and the driveway and footpath around it measured 31m north-west/south-east by 19m. The footprint of the dwelling, an area which measured 27m north-west/south-east by 17m, was further reduced by 0.1-0.2m. The area reduced for the garage measured 10m north-east/south-west and 8m wide. The area reduced for the wastewater treatment system measured 13m north-east/south-west and 10m wide.
The stratigraphy revealed during the monitoring of the groundworks was natural and undisturbed, i.e. topsoil above natural subsoils. There were no finds. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
