The development site comprised Nos. 1-6, Haymarket, Dublin 7, a block of buildings bounded by Haymarket to the north, Bridewell Lane to the south, Smithfield Square to the east and Burgess Lane to the west. The new development was proposed to be built on the Smithfield block which comprised a number of outlets and offices over an underground carpark. The development was granted permission under Dublin City Council, Planning reg. 3271/18 subject to planning conditions, including Condition 14, a-j made by the City Archaeologist.
An Archaeological Impact Statement required under the planning conditions showed, in summary, that the site was in an area of archaeological potential. However, it was concluded, from the depth of the underground carpark (which occupied most of the site) and borehole evidence, that archaeological material was unlikely to have survived to any great extent, if at all.
Monitoring of the contractor’s works from demolition to removal of the thick concrete basal layer of the carpark and basement floors took place from 14 November 2019. Features survived only in the north-east corner of the site. Post-medieval drains were noted late this year. These were fully excavated in early 2020 (see Excavations Bulletin 2020). Post-medieval pottery also came to light.
