Test trenching was undertaken at the site of a proposed development at Garter’s Lane, Saggart, County Dublin. The development involves the construction of two, two-story dwelling houses in a garden to the rear of an existing dwelling house.
The proposed development was within the zone of archaeological potential established around the village of Saggart, DU021-034. Two test trenches were excavated within the footprint of the development.
Test Trench 1 was aligned north-west to south-east. Natural ground was exposed at a depth of 0.6m at the north-west end of the trench and 0.4m at the south-east end of the trench.
Test Trench 2 was also deepest at the south-eastern end of the trench with a depth of 0.8m and was 0.45m in depth at the north-eastern end of the trench. The natural ground in both trenches comprised a mid-yellowish brown silty clay. No finds or features of archaeological significance were exposed in either trench.
