An excavation was carried out at Collegeland, Co. Dublin following the discovery of archaeological remains during monitoring of topsoil stripping within the wayleave of an Irish Water pipeline scheme. The excavation area is located within relatively flat agricultural land to the immediate south-west of Casement Aerodrome. The land prior to development ground works was under arable cultivation. There are excellent views to the west, east and south, with the ground surface sloping gently to the south.

There are no archaeological features within 500m of the excavation area. However, a significant concentration of archaeological features (burnt mounds) of probable Bronze Age date have been uncovered to the south-west (Duffy and McIlreavy 2019; McIlreavy 2019 a–h). The medieval royal manor of Saggart is located 1.8km south-east of the excavation area.

The excavation recorded a heavily truncated burnt mound spread feature and associated former plank-lined trough. The trough displayed evidence for both wooden posts and planks in its construction, but these would appear to have been removed after its final use, prior to its infill.

Post-excavation analyses are ongoing.
