Testing was undertaken at Church View, Church Road, Saggart, Co Dublin on January 23 2019 to fulfill a request for further information from South Dublin County Council. The planning reference number is SD18A/0321. The applicants have applied for planning permission for the construction of 4 two-bedroom single-storey semi-detached units at the rear of an existing house. The development site is located south-east of an ecclesiastical complex associated with Saggart graveyard (DU021-034003-) in Saggart, Co. Dublin.
Geophysical testing was undertaken at the site by J.M. Leigh Surveys Ltd. However the site ground conditions were not suitable for either gradiometer or resistance survey.
A total of five test trenches were excavated by machine using a flat grading bucket under the direction of the archaeologist on the footprint of the proposed foundations. A thin layer of topsoil was recorded in all the trenches, the sod had been removed from the site sometime in the past. Subsoil was recorded in all trenches as a depth of 0.2-0.3m below current ground level. It was a mid-brown sandy clay with stone inclusions. No archaeological features, stratigraphy or artefacts were recorded in any of the five trenches.
