Monitoring took place of Donegal Countywide Watermains Rehabilitation in the Corker area in the townlands of Creevy and Kilbarron, Co. Donegal along the R231 Ballyshannon to Rossnowlagh road, at various dates between 15 and 24 May 2019. The area monitored consisted of a 300m length of linear trench to accommodate a new watermains pipe which was mechanically excavated into existing road. The pipeline traversed the zone of archaeological notification for Kilbarron Church DG103-055---, Graveyard DG103-055001-, Children’s Burial Ground DG103-055002- and Ringfort – Cashel DG103-051----. The northern end of the scheme was near Ringfort – Cashel DG103-051---- in the townland of Kilbarron. The trench was orientated north-south following the direction of the road. The trench measured 0.8m wide by 1.2m deep. The material consisted of tarmac and gravel to a depth of c. 0.25m, which lay over heavily compacted predominantly sandstone substrate with a dark brown peaty silty matrix. No archaeological material was noted in this monitoring area.
Further monitoring took place at over the course of four days, in proximity to Kilbarron Church DG103-055---, Graveyard DG103-055001- and Children’s Burial Ground DG103-055002-. The linear trench began at the northern end continued along the existing road within c.30m of Kilbarron Church and Graveyard. The trench measured 0.7m wide by 1.2m deep. The material consisted of tarmac and gravel to a depth of c. 0.25m, this overlay crushed limestone material used to raise the road in this area above the surrounding land, which drops off in a gradual slope west towards Kilbarron Church. The substrate consisted of moderately compacted predominantly sandstone with a dark brown peaty silty matrix. No archaeological material was noted in this monitoring area.
