A programme of pre-development testing was conducted on the site of a proposed graveyard extension at Tawny, Kilcar, County Donegal on 5 December. A total of three test trenches were excavated on the site. The topsoil generally consisted of greyish brown sandy clay. It overlay a layer of fill consisting of topsoil and grey sandy clay redeposited natural subsoil mixed with modern refuse in the form of plastic items and concrete. A pocket of peat was encountered close to the south-eastern end of Trench 1. This portion of the site also contained a number of stone drains and what looked to be a modern service trench running towards the recently built adjacent houses. The natural subsoil varied greatly across the site, from grey sandy clay, grey and red sandy clay, yellow/orange sandy clay, grey gravelly clay and occasional bedrock intrusions. Nothing archaeological was identified in any of the test trenches or during a scan of the up-cast topsoil from the trenches.
