The site at Feeny Road Junction comprised 10 large pits, all of which showed evidence of burning in situ, with charcoal deposits and scorched subsoil.
Samples of charred twig from one of the pits returned a radiocarbon date of AD 860-988.
The shape and size of these pits, with the evidence for burning, are similar to previously excavated early medieval charcoal-production pits.
These pits are similar to the ‘burnt pits’ excavated at Derrychrier 3 as part of the A6 Drumahoe to Dungiven dualling scheme.
