Testing was carried out over the course of two days ahead of a housing development located at 174 Bishop Street, Derry. A total of six trenches, measuring c.75 linear meters, were excavated. The layout of the trenches was designed to investigate the potential of a recorded monument listed as a 17th-century Franciscan Friary (LDY014:062). Testing failed to identify any features or deposits of archaeological significance. Topsoil was composed of a dark brown loamy clay while subsoil, identified in five of the six trenches, was an orangey yellow sandy clay. The longest trench, located on the western perimeter of the site, revealed a minimum depth of 2.2m of made ground. It was not possible to excavate below this level.
