Test excavations were carried out in advance of a planning application for a proposed housing development, consisting of 26 domestic dwellings, at Caherdaniel West, Bantry, Co. Cork.
A Geophysical Survey (Fluxgate Magnetometry) was undertaken at the proposed development site in January 2019 (Licence No. 18R0240). The area surveyed measured approximately 1.8 ha. The survey identified a number of magnetic responses that have a moderate-to-low potential of indicating the presence of buried archaeological deposits.
Test trenches were excavated within the footprint of the development on 27 and 28 May 2019. Constraints on the testing array comprised several overhead ESB wires crossing the scheme.
No previously unknown archaeological features, finds or deposits were found within the area specified for archaeological testing.
