Tobar Archaeological Services were engaged to undertake an archaeological assessment including testing of a proposed extension to a bungalow which is situated on the site of a ringfort. The location of the ringfort, CO032-044, is marked on the 1st Edition OS map and this was overlaid on the proposed site layout map. The ringfort has no surface expression and is not marked on the 2nd Edition mapping. The bungalow is located on the ‘site of’ the ringfort and this accords with the description of the monument in the Archaeological Inventory. The area of the proposed extension where it overlays the concrete yard to the rear of the bungalow has been significantly reduced/truncated and therefore the archaeological potential in this area is minimal. Potential impacts to any remaining sub-surface archaeology elsewhere was mitigated through archaeological testing the results of which showed that no sub-surface features such as a fosse or any internal features were located in any area where it is proposed to construct the extension, driveway or carparking area.
Monitoring of the site was subsequently undertaken under the same licence number.
